Configure the Unitech EA520 Inventory Scanner: Set Up AscendScan and BeyondTrust

Unitech EA520 - Configuration After Factory Reset

  1. Select the appropriate language and then tap START to begin.
    Screenshots in this section show the process described in the steps in this article.
  2. Select Skip on the Connect to mobile network page.
  3. Select Set up offline on the Connect to Wi-Fi page.
  4. Select CONTINUE on the Set up offline? pop up.
  5. Select the appropriate time zone and then tap Next.
  6. On the Google Services page, enable Use location with the slider, then tap More.
  7. Also on the Google Services page, enable Allow scanning and disable Send usage and diagnostic data. Then tap More.
  8. Choose Accept on the displayed page.
  9. Choose Skip on the Set screen lock page.
  10. Choose Skip anyway on the Skip screen lock? pop up.
  11. This part is now finished and the main desktop appears; continue with additional EA520 device setup for AscendScan. Instructions are below.

Unitech EA520 - Device Setup for AscendScan

  1. Enable Android 3-button navigation (if the three standard Android buttons are not already visible at the bottom of the display):
    Settings > System > Gestures > System Navigation > Select 3-button navigation

  2. Set the Screen timeout to 5 minutes:
    Settings > Display > Advanced > Screen timeout
  3. Enable the Use location permission for the device using the slider:
    Settings > Location
  4. Enable the Wi-Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning permissions for the device using the sliders:
    Settings > Location > Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning
  5. Disable the Usage & diagnostics setting on the device using the slider:
    Settings > Privacy > Advanced > Usage & diagnostics
  6. Set the Unitech Scanner Service to Factory Default:
    Settings > USS (Unitech Scanner Service) > (choose the Factory Default menu option)
  7. Configure the On-screen keyboard:
    Settings > System > Languages & input > On-screen keyboard > Gboard > Preferences
    • Number row: Enabled
    • Show emoji switch key: Disabled
    • Show emojis in symbols keyboard: Disabled. Note: skip if option is not present
    • One-handed mode: Off
    • Keyboard height: Short
  8. Change the keyboard theme to the "black with turquoise dot" option (most likely the second option in the first row of the Colors section); when selecting this option, ensure Key borders are enabled using the slider:
    Settings > System > Languages & input > On-screen keyboard > Gboard > Theme

  9. For all four volume settings, change the level to approximately 20%:
    Settings > Sound
  10. Copy the AscendScan installer (.apk) file to the device:
    Connect the EA520 to the computer via the USB cable. Enable the File Transfer capability by swiping down from the top of the device’s screen and then change the current Charging this device via USB setting to the File Transfer setting (tap as indicated to see this option).


    From your computer, open Windows Explorer. There should now be an entry for the EA520 device.

    Make sure the AscendScan.#.#.#.apk file is in an accessible location on the computer, then copy the AscendScan.#.#.#.apk file on the computer to the Internal Shared Storage > Download folder on the EA520 device.
  11. Install the AscendScan app (but DO NOT start the app):
    Open the Files app on the EA520 and then navigate to the “Downloads” folder. From there, tap on the AscendScan.#.#.#.apk file to initiate the installation process. After the installation is complete, DO NOT select the option to open the app.
  12. Enable the following permissions for AscendScan:
    Settings -> Apps & notifications -> tap "SEE ALL ## APPS" -> AscendScan -> Permissions
    • Camera: Only while app is in use
    • Files and media: All Files
    • Location: Only while app is in use
  13. Enable Allow from this source on the Install unknown apps page for AscendScan using the slider:
    Settings > Apps & notifications > Advanced > Special app access > Install unknown apps > AscendScan
  14. Copy the BeyondTrust Support app to the device:
    Following a process like that detailed in Step 10, copy the BeyondTrust Support app installer (.apk) file on the computer to the Internal Shared Storage > Download folder on the EA520 device.
    Note: the file may have a very long name, such as “BeyondTrust_Bomgar-20210601211408-2.2.17-24510f44-101445-release.apk”
  15. Install the BeyondTrust Support app (but DO NOT start the app):
    Open the Files app on the EA520 and then navigate to the Downloads folder. From there, tap on the applicable BeyondTrust Support app installer file (as copied from Step 14) to initiate the installation process. After the installation is complete, DO NOT select the option to open the app.
  16. Configure the following permissions for the BeyondTrust Support app:
    Settings > Apps & notifications > tap "SEE ALL ## APPS" > Support > Permissions
    • Files and media: All Files
    • Camera: Deny
    • Contacts: Deny
    • Phone: Deny
  17. Enable Use Support on the Accessibility Support page using the slider to allow the BeyondTrust Support app to remote control the device:
    Settings > Accessibility > Support
  18. Configure the desktop:
    The AscendScan icon should be in the lower left of the display, the Files icon in the lower right, and the BeyondTrust Support app icon just left of the Files icon.
    Remove (but do not uninstall, if prompted) all the other icons from the desktop.

Setting App Permissions After Starting AscendScan

After starting AscendScan, the following permissions prompts may appear.

  1. Select OK to continue

  2. Select WHILE USING THE APP for the pictures and record video permission request
  3. Select WHILE USING THE APP for the device’s location permission request
  4. Select ALLOW for the photos, media, and files permission request
  5. Verify that the required permissions for AscendScan have been set by clicking OK on the next two verification screens

  6. The Use location permission must be enabled from the device’s Location page

  7. Navigate back to AscendScan and verify that the Use location setting has been enabled

  8. From AscendScan, on the Utilities > About Page, select the CHECK FOR UPDATES option. This may lead to a prompt that pulls up the Install unknown apps permission.
    Use the slider to Allow from this source on the Install unknown apps page.

  9. Note that after enabling the Install unknown apps setting and navigating back to AscendScan, the app will automatically restart. Navigate back to the Utilities > About page to re-initiate the app update process
